BASF S.A., Brasilien, Werk Guaratinguetá. Der größte Chemiestandort der BASF in Südamerika liegt im brasilianischen Guaratinguetá im Industriezentrum zwischen São Paulo, Minas Gerais und Rio de Janeiro. Hier betreibt die BASF zwölf Produktionsanlagen, in denen über 750 verschiedene Produkte mit einer Gesamtkapazität von 260.000 Tonnen pro Jahr hergestellt werden. Die Produktpalette reicht von Styrolpolymeren und Pigmenten über Kunststoffe und Dispersionen bis hin zu Butylacrylat und Hilfsstoffen. Im Juni 2003 hat die BASF einen Mehrproduktkomplex für Pflanzenschutzmittel in Betrieb genommen, die zu 90 % für den Export bestimmt sind. Um den Warenfluss zwischen Guaratinguetá und Santos, dem wichtigsten Handelshafen in Südamerika, zu gewährleisten, hat die BASF im Jahr 2000 eine eigene Eisenbahnstrecke gebaut und den Standort an das öffentliche Schienennetz angebunden. The major production site of BASF in South America is located in Guaratinguetá, Brazil, in the industrial center between Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. In 12 manufacturing plants BASF produces over 750 different products with a total capacity of 260,000 metric tons per year. The site’s products vary from styrene polymers, pigments, plastics, dispersions and butyl acrylate to auxiliaries. In June 2003, a plant for the production of agricultural products started operation; 90 percent of the output is exported. To guarantee a steady flow of goods between Guaratinguetá and Santos, the main port in South America, BASF built its own rail spur at the end of 2000 with linking the BASF’s site to the main railroad line. BASF breaks ground for its new production plant for sodium methylate in Guaratinguetá, Brazil, its largest site in South America. The plant will have a capacity of 60,000 metric tons per year and is primarily intended to supply the regional market. It is the second BASF plant for this product, in addition to a plant in Ludwigshafen.

The project will involve a capital expenditure in the low double-digit million Euro range.
Sodium methylate is an efficient and reliable catalyst for the production of biodiesel, which has developed into an important and increasing alternative for diesel fuels in the past years. Biodiesel meets the requirements of engine manufacturers for high-quality fuels.
The plant is expected to be operational from the end of 2011 onwards. Legislation in Brazil requires fuel to contain 5 % biodiesel from 2010 onwards. Argentina has also mandated that biodiesel makes up 5 % of fuel by 2010. Other South American countries have similar legislation.
