1 March 2006 marks the 50th anniversary of the day on which the physicist from Dresden, Dr. Rudolf Wobser, founded the Lauda company in Lauda, a small town near Würzburg, Germany. After a few initial teething problems, the thermostating pioneer made his major breakthrough at the Achema 1958 in Frankfurt with new types of laboratory thermostats in a modular system, and cooling thermostats with mechanical cooling. The Ultra cryomats – registered as a brand name – advanced to become one of the most familiar product ranges. Starting with the product portfolio of temperature control, later including viscosimetry and tensiometry, the company progressed to become an internationally-active provider of thermostating devices – from the laboratory through to production. The Lauda Dr. R. Wobser company currently has a workforce of 220. The family-run company – already in its third generation – exports its products to over 60 countries, and has an export share in excess of 50 % with an annual turnover of around 30 million Euro.
