The Siemens Drive Technologies Division now supplies motors with the “increased safety” type of protection in the premium efficiency class IE3. All Ex e type motors in the Loher Chemstar range are already available in efficiency class IE2. Industry-specific models can be supplied for use in aggressive atmosphere.

Explosion hazards, aggressive atmosphere and extreme temperatures are characteristic of the ambient conditions in the chemical and petrochemicals industries. The Siemens Drive Technologies Division supplies explosion-proof Loher Chemstar motors to meet these daunting requirements. The entire range is already available with the “increased safety” type of protection Ex e in efficiency class IE2. However, a large part of the portfolio is now also offered in the premium efficiency class IE3. These new motors prevent unacceptably high temperatures from occurring at all internal points and guarantee a high level of efficiency. They come with shaft heights up to 450 mm and a power range from 0.12 to 315 kW.

Premium efficiency motors are up to 10 % more efficient than standard motors. This translates into tremendous energy-saving potential as well as lower operating costs – even at explosion-protected industrial locations. Many of the Ex e motors in the Loher Chemstar line also meet the latest IEC 60034-30 standard, although explosion-proof motors are not yet subject to the new energy efficiency guidelines. As of 2017, all motors with a rated power from 0.75 to 375 kW and fitted with a variable-speed drive will have to comply with the requirements of efficiency class IE3 or IE2.
Adapted to industrial needs
Loher Chemstar motors can also be installed in aggressive atmosphere thanks to their industry-specific design including, for example, a chemical-resistant finish and galvanised fan cowl. Furthermore, special models with voltages from 230 to 690 V work reliably at temperatures between -55 and +60 °C as well as in zones containing dust or gas. They are consequently even suitable for use in deserts or polar regions. The basic version has IP 56 protection, though versions up to IP 67 are available as an option where a higher degree of protection is stipulated. Besides the standard models, there are also individual drive solu-tions that can be adapted to suit the plant, the application or the customer’s specification. The medium-voltage Vario motors extend the portfolio of the Chemstar motors up into the megawatt range and are therefore used above all in the oil and gas industry.
The Dynavert T range of frequency converters was especially designed for operation with explosion-proof motors. These converters for the chemical and petrochemical sectors are characterised by high availability, serviceability and durability. If they are equipped with the optional, Atex certified motor temperature monitoring system, explosion-proof motors can be operated without the otherwise essential external line contactor. The evaluation is implemented directly as sole protection by means of the PTC thermistors installed in the motor winding.
