Wherever flammable fluids are pumped, the inside of the pump is likely to be categorised as an explosive area. It is difficult for many operators to define the zone for the inside of the pump unambiguously. The situation is even less clear if the pump must overcome a geodetic suction head or if upstream stirring or mixing procedures continuously introduce air into the fluid that is to be pumped. There are basically not enough pumps with the suitable approval – zone 0 for the inside of the pump. Many try to resort to installing monitoring devices. Yet this cannot always solve the problem in a legally safe way. Incorrect categorisation might create severe liabilities in a case of emergency. Abel supplies electro-mechanical membrane pumps of construction sizes EM-025 and EM-040 in various designs. These pumps are suitable for use in zone 0 inside – as they have the required prototype approval.
