Air-operated diaphragm pumps in machined-plastic design for improved economy
Spacious interior for increased output

The E-series, as the follow-up model to the proven A-series, offers not only a new external design but also enhancements in the form of numerous improved features to optimise handling, maintenance and assembly. Furthermore, these air-operated diaphragm pumps made from machined plastic have undergone technical refurbishing and exceed current economic standards.

Peter Schüten

The robust design consisting of three striking housings instantly betrays the parentage of the E-series. However, this recognition effect, which is underlined by the compatible main dimensions, is offset by the rounded silhouette that takes up another thread of the brand tradition, namely the AD-Multicor line.
The most conspicuous detail of the new design are the rings visible on the side housings instead of the small caps for which the A-series is known. These rings reflect the modified housing style: the housing parts of the E-series are clamped together by four, six or eight bolts, depending on the size. These bolts no longer clamp the housing in the conventional way with nuts, washers and disc springs, however. Instead, underneath the plastic ring cap on each side is a solid diaphragm-sized ring made of stainless steel, against which the housing bolts are tightened simultaneously.
This modified fixation offers the advantage that the tightening force of the bolts on the housing parts is evenly and smoothly distributed. What was previously transmitted as a concentrated load is now a distributed force, permitting a higher bolt torque and mutually supported bolts. In addition to the internal benefits linked to the flow of forces, the new design also allows easier assembly by reducing the number of parts.
Other details have likewise been optimised in order to facilitate maintenance and assembly. Asymmetrical housing bolts for easier alignment, the defined end stop of the ball retainers and the flats on the housing plugs are just a few examples.
The most outstanding advances are not evident externally, however, yet they make a crucial difference for users. One of the major development targets was to reduce the internal flow resistances that have to be overcome by the fluid as it passes through the pump. Firstly, the internal flow pattern was optimised to achieve fewer and smoother changes of direction. Secondly, the enlarged cross-sections of various detail structures help minimise pressure losses during passage through these areas.
These enhancements generate significant advantages for end users in terms of operating costs. The overall reduction in the internal flow resistance cuts down the amount of pump power expended inside the pump while expanding the share transferred to the fluid. This optimised internal energy conversion results in a corresponding improvement in the pump’s efficiency. When operated under extreme conditions, an E-series pump either manages a higher output with the same air consumption or requires less air to achieve the same flow rate in a given application. The maximum flow rate can be between 6 and 28 % higher, depending on the pump size. Based on a realistic operating point of 6 bar air supply pressure against 3 bar discharge head, the maximum output is increased by up to 30 % while the air consumption is reduced by as much as 20 %.
Interchangeability guaranteed
Another important aspect when selecting a new pump is its interchangeability. The fluid ports of the E-series pumps are designed with the same size and position as their A-series equivalents. Together with the identical footprint, this simplifies the replacement of A-series pumps with E-series models. There is no need to alter the pipework, regardless of whether the A-series pumps are already installed in the application or planned as part of a standard basic concept for systems and modules. Wearing parts like diaphragms, valve balls and air-side parts are similarly interchangeable to facilitate the storage of spare parts.
Six sizes and various extras
Like its predecessor, the E-series is offered in six sizes with higher nominal flow rates from approximately 0.9 to 35 m3/h, covering a wide array of possible applications. The pump housings can be made of polyethylene (PE) or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and alternatively supplied in a conductive version for use in hazardous areas (Atex). The diaphragms (without external discs) and valve balls are available in EPDM, PTFE or NBR; in applications where a higher dry suction capacity is required, cylinder valves are additionally offered for fluids containing no solids.
The E-Series also carries on another impor-tant tradition of Almatec pumps, namely their ability to be equipped with various optional extras for customisation to the requirements of a particular application. The products can be fitted, for instance, with a barrier chamber system, stroke counting, diaphragm monitoring, flange connections or drainage. Due to the pump dimensions however, not every option can be purchased for every size.
A pulsation damper – the ET model – is likewise provided for the E-Series. The design incorporates the same ring-clamping structure to achieve a metal-free exterior. Despite this, the pulsation damper is still interchangeable with the old series. The damper can be top-mounted on a new pump or retrofitted in an existing application. In addition, it is optionally available in a version with flange connections.

Advantages at a glance
  • Improved efficiency for higher output and/or reduced consumption.
  • Modified housing fixation for evenly smooth flow of forces and increased mechanical stability.
  • Increased safety in operating, maintenance and installation.
  • Eased maintenance by reduced number of parts and simplified handling of the parts.
  • Interchangeability with A-series pumps.
  • Wide variety of extra options enables pumps to be customised for the application.
  • Pulsation damper supplied with the pump or retrofit able, flange version available.
  • Pulsation dampers are interchangeable between both earlier and newer models
