In spite of all these precautions that have been taken by each producing company, failures of blowers and compressors for the compressed-air supply may happen. Rental units do not only fill the gaps of sudden bottlenecks. Their utilisation can specifically be planned, for example as replacement during maintenance and repair, during construction and reconstruction of plants, in investigation and development projects or for process optimisation. The fields of application and use are manifold, e.g. as intake- and compressed air systems for the pneumatic transport, the industrial and municipal waste water treatment, for filter flushing and fermentation.
The company Aerzen International Rental B.V., a 100 per cent subsidiary of the German-based Aerzener Maschinenfabrik, is specialised in this field. The company offers an extensive range of oil-free compressing rental units in the pres-sure range from -700 mbar to 10 000 mbar g. The frequency controlled compressors have been developed especially for the rental application, i.e. very tough, transportable, user-friendly and appropriate for outdoor installation. Even large volume flows are not a problem, as several units can be connected via temporary piping, so that bigger compressors can also be applied. Accessories such as transformers, diesel generators, power cables, coolers and dryers belong to the scope of supply of Aerzen International Rental. Turnkey plants will be supplied on request including assembly, commissioning and training of the staff at site.
The advantages of rental compressors are patently obvious. In case of machine failures, you avoid production loss thanks to short-term projects. A further application for rented compressors represent tests for rented compressors, e.g. in the field of pneumatic transport. The biggest advantage is that the units are equipped with frequency converters. Therefore, all different parameters can be tested. Thereby, the volume flow and the compression pressure can be controlled. If requested, the users may receive hotline support by a service provider around the clock.
Manageable costs
Even with long and planned projects the application of rental compressors offers an economic alternative. Therefore, no capital is tied up, new investments and the corresponding delivery times can be avoided.
In case of all application cases the costs are very transparent as the expenditures for maintenance work and repairs are included in the rental rates. Usually, the transport costs are covered by flat rates. Of course, it depends on the use of the rented units – whether they are applied for 24 hours or used as stand-by units, when a redundant unit has failed for a longer period of time. In such cases, the user may use special stand-by rental rates. For all eventualities, this procedure saves high costs due to express deliveries and surcharges for fitter hourly rates outside normal working hours. Even leasing contracts might be of some interest regarding positive displacement blower and screw compressor units. The quotations combine flexibility for the entire contract period with the highest level of maintenance and service.
Application at Kronos Titan
Kronos Titan, manufacturer of titanium oxide, has utilised this rental service in the factory in Nordenham. After the breakdown of a screw compressor located in the vacuum station of this factory fast acting was required as with the remaining three compressors a stand-by machine was no longer available. A rental unit of type CVI 4400 had been the solution. The single-stage screw compressor unit VML 60 supplies in the negative pressure operation a maximum volume flow of 73 m³/min with a vacuum of -700 mbar. With these performance data the unit offers sufficient capacity to replace two of the existing screw compressors. Simultaneously, this made it possible to revise the old compressors step by step. The performance reserve has offered the necessary security, in order to compensate the missing conveying quantity in case of an additional failure.
During the first revision the user decided, however, to invest no longer in the old compressors. Without further ado, Aerzen International Rental has supplied a second rental compressor, so that the complete vacuum station could be operated by means of the compressors CVI-4400. Both rental compressors had been modified to a process-controlled suction controller. Thanks to this control the plant now provides reliable results enabling the planning of a new vacuum station for the factory in Nordenham. In addition, it is guaranteed by installation of the rental units that the disassembly of the four existing units as well as the installation of new compressors can be mostly carried out without shutdown of the vacuum system.
