Ammonia is a frequently used refrigerant especially in large refrigeration plants in the chemicals and food industries. However, the toxic gas is also a hazardous substance. Incidents often lead to personal injuries. NH3-scrubbers from Colasit made from corrosion-resistant plastic minimise this hazard. These scrubbers are installed in the emergency ventilation system and start automatically when an excessively high concentration of NH3 is detected in a refrigeration containment. Ammonia is bound by absorption when injected with water. The contaminated wastewater is collected and, dependent on requirements, can be subjected to continuous clarification and piped to a water treatment plant, or collected in an integrated tank for later treatment.
