Mobile application pushes pumps to their limits

CG Chemikalien relies on magnetically coupled SHM pumps
Mobile application pushes pumps to their limits

The chemical industry is highly demanding and pumps in particular are often pushed to their limits. This is also the case at CG Chemikalien of Laatzen, near Hanover. The company pumps sodium hydroxide solution as well as sulphuric, phosphoric, nitric, acetic and formic acid in concentrations up to 99 %. The chemicals are filled into mobile tanks and delivered to customers. ASV Stübbe’s magnetically coupled SHM centrifugal pumps are used for this purpose.

CG Chemikalien GmbH & Co. KG is an independent specialist and distributor in the field of industrial and speciality chemicals. A steadily growing family-owned company, it achieves group sales of more than 370 million euros. Its client base includes well-known firms in the automotive, steel, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. The portfolio ranges from window cleaning products and active ingredients to foods and animal feed.

CG Chemikalien has been resorting to ASV Stübbe’s product solutions for over 20 years and considers them perfect for use with acids and alkalis. Magnetically coupled SHM pumps are installed at its Laatzen facility on specially designed trolleys to enable the tanks to be filled in mobile use. These pumps are not only exposed to highly aggressive chemicals; they also have to function time and time again during dry running – a process that makes very severe demands on both the material and the machine.
“When it comes to pumps, CG Chemikalien is a pretty rough place to work”, says plant manager Michael Schäfer. “If anybody pushes those pumps to their limits, it’s definitely us. The SHM models are used for mobile pumping of a variety of media like hydrochloric, sulphuric, formic and nitric acid. We currently operate ten pumps at our facility and we can say for certain that no other type can cope with the strains of these tough and extremely demanding working conditions.”
Ability to dry-run is very important
The ability to perform a dry run is of great importance for Schäfer. The SHM pumps have this proven ability. Due to the special hard/soft combination of the sliding bearings (Al2O3 and HD Carbon), their dry running characteristics are extremely good. “These pumps are confronted daily with different media in various concentrations. After each work step they are flushed with water and run completely dry in order to avoid contamination.” With conventional, mechanically sealed centrifugal pumps this wouldn’t be possible because they need a lubricant, without which the mechanical seal would fail totally. Furthermore, certain media can cause a thermal reaction in case of contact with water. This is particularly stressful for the pump materials. “The stability and handling of ASV Stübbe’s solution make it without doubt the very best in the market for our purposes.”
Perfect solution for mobile installation
The smooth running and maximum leakage protection of the SHM pump are just as convincing. “This fact is extremely important for us because the pumps are in mobile use at our customers‘ facilities as well as at our own.” The strong magnet system of the SHM transmits the engine power efficiently to the pump impeller without contact, ensuring extremely smooth running. Due to its low vibration, the SHM pump is optimally suited for mobile installation. The hermetically sealed hydraulic system guarantees absolute leak tightness. Flaws in the mechanically sealed centrifugal pump are eliminated and leakage caused by worn or damaged seals is prevented.
Michael Schäfer is especially convinced by the high quality of the products, the excellent value for money and the personal contact with the sales team and service technicians. This good cooperation has also led to the development of further product solutions tailored to CG Chemikalien’s individual requirements.

Magnetically coupled SHM pump

Overview

The magnetically coupled SHM pump ensures reliable power transmission due to its efficient, high-performance magnet system. The engine power is transmitted to the pump impeller without direct contact. Due to the special bearing combination, the sliding bearings (Al2O3 and HD Carbon) do not need any lubrication to reduce friction and the resulting frictional heat to a minimum. They consequently stand an unusually good chance of remaining undamaged during the dry running process.
The hermetically sealed hydraulic system eliminates flaws in the mechanically sealed centrifugal pump and prevents leakage caused by worn or damaged seals. This guarantees absolute leak tightness and ensures a clean and flexible work process. The magnetically coupled SHM pump is therefore ideal for dangerous media, where even the tiniest leak means a high safety risk. Cost-intensive maintenance of mechanical seals, accompanied by reduced availability of the system, are effectively avoided.
The head is up to 27 m at flow rates up to 65 m3/h. Each pump can be supplied with a drive capacity of 0.18 to 7.5 kW. The hydraulic system is made of PP or PVDF while EPDM, FPM and FFKM are used for the seals. HD Carbon/Al2O3, SSiC/SSiC and HD Carbon/SSiC are offered as material combinations for the sliding bearings.
