Gentle and precise stacking at limited space

High capacity layer palletiser with integrated twin-belt turning device
Gentle and precise stacking at limited space

Schwenk Putztechnik, a manufacturer of sustainable and ecological dry mortar, had considerable problems with its previous palletising solution. The bags were often deformed and sometimes even torn due to jerky movements. Modernisation became absolutely essential. The company chose paletpac, a high-capacity layer palletiser with an integrated twin-belt turning device.

Dry mortar is a prefabricated mixture comprised of mineral binding agents as cement, limestone or gypsum as well as sand, rock dust and further additives. The craftsmen on the building site merely have to mix them with water and they are ready for use. Since possible mixing errors are avoided, the manufacturer can guarantee a consistently high quality for this construction material. Schwenk Putztechnik, headquartered in Ulm, is one of the leading makers of sustainable and ecological dry mortar. The company has been producing these materials for more than 160 years at seven ultra-modern plants. “We place great importance on presenting our products optimally in the building material trade”, says Martin Markus, who manages the Schwenk Putztechnik facilities in the south-west German towns of Eigeltingen and Allmendingen. When it comes to the manufacturing process, Schwenk focuses on trouble-free transport, palletising and packaging.
Reliable bag handling
“Our previous palletising solution caused considerable problems when the bags were turned”, recalls Peter Richter, Deputy Plant Manager in Allmendingen. “The bags were deformed and sometimes even torn due to jerky movements.” The building material manufacturer was not able to ensure a clean and consistent appearance of the palletised bags. Schwenk Putztechnik not only wanted to achieve an improved, uniform stacking result but was also aiming to increase its production capacity, reduce dust emissions and prolong maintenance intervals.
While searching for a suitable supplier, Schwenk came across the Beumer Group. This one-stop provider from Beckum offers sustainable systems for filling, palletising and packaging technology from a single source. An internationally successful company, Beumer can look back on years of experience in the building material industry. In cooperation with Schwenk Putztechnik its experts developed a solution which meets the requirements of both production plants.
Gentle palletising guaranteed
Beumer introduced Schwenk to paletpac, its high-capacity layer palletiser. This palletiser family enables bags filled with bulk material to be stacked on pallets precisely layer by layer. The outstanding geometric precision with which the layers are formed results in very stable bag stacks. Beumer supplied one system with a capacity of 1800 bags per hour and another designed for 2500 bags. Staff at both facilities can adapt the palletisers quickly and easily to different bag sizes without tools. The paletpac stacks bags up to 2400 mm in height on any standard pallet size and in any technically feasible pattern. The necessary parameters can be set in a few simple steps using a multi-program. The special human machine interface (HMI) is particularly intuitive. The control panel has a short learning curve, so that efficient workflows are possible after only minimal training and induction.
Stable stacking
To enable the bags to be turned rapidly and gently to the required position without being deformed, the systems are equipped with a twin-belt turning device. As regards stackability, this device offers one great advantage compared to conventional turning processes: it moves the bags without stressing them mechanically. Instead, two belt conveyors are driven in parallel at different speeds during the turning process, bringing the bags gently into the desired position. The intelligent control of the twin-belt turning device takes account of the physical properties of the items to be packed, so that precise positioning is guaranteed based on the respective packing pattern. If the bag size changes, all relevant parameters are simply recorded and controlled by the software. An active control loop is used for this purpose. The drives are controlled by frequency converters to facilitate gentle, regular rotation and prevent the bagged products from losing their shape. Consistent stacking results are achieved throughout the service life of the system. Ready packed pallets can be stacked safely on top of one another to save space. The fact that no time-consuming retooling is necessary in case of multiple bag sizes is a further advantage. All the operator has to do is enter the bag length and width. The system then moves each bag into the right position. Thanks to the modular design, the twin-belt turning device can also be retrofitted in existing palletising systems without any problems.
Quiet and efficient
Another reason for Schwenk Putztechnik to opt for the Beumer systems was their efficient operation. In addition to the initial capital investment, the costs for operation, spare parts and maintenance also played an important role. These costs are much lower with the twin-belt turning device than with conventional alternatives. Product changes are automated, which means idle times are avoided, and since the palletiser has no expensive mechanical components, maintenance and repair costs are lower in the long term – and with them the life-cycle costs. Whereas comparable solutions rely on pneumatic elements, the work of the twin-belt turning device is done by energy-efficient synchronous servo motors. The elimination of all mechanical parts results in more economical running and less noise during operation.
Beumer was responsible for the entire management of this project – from the initial planning to the final installation. The experts in Customer Support take care of optimising and maintaining the systems, which are consequently always available. And in the unlikely event of acute problems, Schenk can contact the Beumer hotline around the clock.
