Energy-saving drive

Reduces energy consumption up to 50 %
Energy-saving drive

Energy-saving drive
When the actual motor load is 50 % or less than nominal load ESMD reduces the motor’s voltage
Motor operation is responsible for roughly 70 % of electricity consumption of the industrial sector. Most of the time, the energy is used in an inefficient manner. Energy-Saving Motor Drive (ESMD) is an innovative technical approach to achieve energy efficiency, which is unrivalled in industry so far. The ESMD is capable of saving up to 50 % of a motor’s energy consumption.

Motors are efficient devices when exerting their full nominal load – however their efficiency significantly decreases as the applied load on the motor is relatively low in the face of its nominal load. In such cases the motors become wasteful, inefficient and unnecessarily expensive to operate. For these cases InnoSave, an Israeli company, developed the the Energy-Saving Motor Drive (ESMD). ESMD is applicable to a wide variety of equipment in production facilities and for industrial operations, e. g. mixers, compressors, conveyers, centrifuges, granulators, fans, pumps or shredders.

For instance, when the actual motor load is 50 % or less than nominal load ESMD reduces the motor’s voltage and by doing so it decreases the amount of energy used by the motor without impairing motor performance. The ESMD uses a patent-pending voltage control method based on a control algorithm with a closed loop feedback of various parameters such as current, torque or cosF. At any torque level during nominal speed operation, the drive adjusts to the motor’s highest efficiency mode of work. In addition, the drive possesses built-in soft-starting capabilities which allow two times nominal currents during start-up. ESMD is a fully digital drive with a variety of analogue and digital control inputs enabling it to suit a wide range of applications. It also has a removable control panel that can be mounted remotely from the drive.
Different approach
Energy efficiency in the electrical industry motor market is a topic that is addressed mainly via variable frequency drive solutions (VFD). In comparison to that approach, the ESMD saves energy without changing the speed of the motor, i. e. in applications in which the motor operates at constant speed – which is the vast majority of applications. The ESMD does not produce harmonics to the motor or network as is common with VFD’s. Due to its topology the production cost is less expensive than the VFD’s production costs. While the efficiency of the VFD is at 97 % on average the efficiency of the ESMD reaches 99.7 %.
A 100 kW motor that costs 10,000 Euros will, in average, consume 300,000 Euros of electricity in a 20 year period. Purchasing ESMD will save a prospective customer the sum of 56,000 Euros for the similar period of time. Even though InnoSave is a young company, founded 2009, already several Israeli companies trust in the ESMD solution and benefit from energy savings.
