No time to get bored in the Main metropolis

What is there to do in the evenings after Achema? Frankfurt is rich in leisure opportunities after a hard day at the fair. Regardless of whether it’s culture or culinary delights you’re looking for, if you want to get down to some networking or simply switch off – we have plenty of tips ranging from individual sightseeing tours using an app to concerts and exhibitions to wellness facilities.

Author Sabine Koll Journalist

Shows such as Achema are not only about gathering technical information: it is also important to make contacts and get down to some networking. And what could be better than Dechema’s evening event? On the first evening of the show, i. e. on 15 June 2015 from 6.00 p.m. onwards, Dechema is organising a “Meet your Friends” event for exhibitors, journalists and visitors in the Portalhaus (Hall 11, Via Level) on the exhibition site. The huge advantage: the Achema launch party is just a few steps away – an informal event with a buffet and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere. Two bands – Famdüsax, an all-female quartet, and the Missfizz Band – will create a party atmosphere.
App-guided walk around the city
Delegates who prefer to switch off in the evening can still enjoy a sightseeing tour through the banking metropolis. An individual tour can be designed on the iPhone with the “itour Frankfurt” app, which costs 4.49 euros to download from the iTunes Store. The city guide Pauline, the Frankfurt dialect poet Friedrich Stoltze and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe will share exciting information and their personal experiences for a very special visit to Frankfurt. Historical pictures, engravings and portraits present the history of Frankfurt am Main and its personalities to complement the current views of the city. Stories and quotations from the time of Goethe and Stoltze bring Frankfurt’s old quarter to life and allow the visitor to experience Frankfurt’s history. The route of the city tour includes Römer Square, the Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, St. Paul’s Church, the Carmelite Monastery, the Goethe House, Frankfurt Stock Exchange, the banking district, Frankfurt’s museum embankment and Old Sachsenhausen.
Boat trip on the Main after work
A pleasant way of starting an evening in Frankfurt is in the apple wine taverns such as in Sachsenhausen or Bornheim. But why not take a trip on the River Main as well? Here Primus Linie offers a boat trip after work and the Sky Light Tour, which starts from the Eiserner Steg bridge. The boat for the after-work trip leaves its mooring in the early evening and sails in the waters of the River Main. It is late when the Sky Light Tour sets off on its trip along the Main – around 9.30 or 10.00 p.m. Here the passengers will find out everything about the City of Frankfurt am Main’s night-time lighting concept.
What is certain is that there is no excuse to be bored in Frankfurt. There are also plenty of cultural events to choose from during the trade show. For instance, on the evening before Achema starts, i. e. on 14 June 2015, it is the première of “Rosenkavalier” by Richard Strauss at Frankfurt Opera House. And on Tuesday, 16 June 2015 the Opera House is the venue for a Liederabend (evening of song) with Annette Dasch (soprano), Daniel Schmutzhard (baritone) and Helmut Deutsch (piano). The programme includes songs and duets by P. Cornelius, F. Schubert, P. I. Tchaikovsky, and R. Schumann among others.
Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea are appearing together at Frankfurt’s Old Opera House on the evening before Achema starts. The two superstars regularly appear as a main attraction at the world’s major jazz festivals. Bobby McFerrin, whose “Don’t worry, be happy” was once a chart topper, is a talented vocalist and his vocal acrobatics can imitate an entire orchestra. Chick Corea is today among the crème de la crème on the international jazz scene. The two artists working together repeatedly amaze their audiences who rave about their singing and improvisation skills.
Hitchcock’s Vertigo with live music
On Thursday, 18 June 2015 there will be what can be guaranteed to be a spectacular, unusual and uniquely intense film music event at Frankfurt’s Old Opera House. The Hessische Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra will play Bernard Hermann’s live music to accompany Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece “Vertigo – From Amongst the Dead”. His film music visualises what is going on in the mind, subtly invades the deep subconscious of the characters in the film and represents this on a number of levels. This is what makes Hitchcock’s film with Hermann’s music one of the most deeply unsettling yet, at the same time, bewitchingly beautiful psychological dramas. If you have failed to get a ticket for this event, the Frankfurt jazz cellar is also well worth visiting. A jam session takes place there every Wednesday from 9.00 p.m., featuring different – admittedly less well-known – musicians.
Monet exhibition in the Städel Museum
Various art exhibitions provide a further attraction in Frankfurt and, on some days, they are open long enough to make a visit after the show worthwhile. The highlight is the major exhibition “Monet and the birth of impressionism”, which will continue at the Städel Museum on Schaumainkai until 21 June 2015. This is the first exhibition in Germany dedicated to the evolution and early development of impressionism. The focus is on Claude Monet as the key figure in impressionism and his fellow artists Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, Edgar Degas, Alfred Sisley and Camille Pissarro, who revolutionised painting within just a few years. The exhibition illustrates how these artists looked at the world in a different way during the 1860s and 1870s and developed a new style. No other artistic movement before had taken this interplay of colour and light so that shapes dissolved – figures were disembodied, buildings dematerialised and landscapes took on a vague appearance. The show examines this change in the relationship between content and form and therefore shows the multi-faceted nature of innovations in the impressionists‘ paintings. More than ninety masterpieces from international collections can be seen exclusively at this exhibition.

Frankfurt’s most attractive squares and panoramic views

Out and about

  • The Römerberg: The silhouette of the Römer Square is world famous and unmistakably belongs to Frankfurt. Since the 15th century this has been the place where the city’s government met and is what gave the square its name. The Römerberg, which used to be called Samstagsberg, has been used since the 9th century for markets and trade fairs, tournaments and festivals, executions and imperial elections and coronations. In the 16th century it was considered to be the most beautiful square in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. It is from this era that the fountain of justice in the middle of the square also originates. Featuring a statue of Justice with unbound eyes, scales and a sword, this was the first fountain in Frankfurt.
  • St. Paul’s Square: There is an excellent view of St. Paul’s Square in Frankfurt if one is standing under the plane trees or sitting outside one of the many street cafés. Visitors to the city from all over the world stroll across the large square where the famous St. Paul’s Church is situated. The first German National Assembly met here in 1848. This oval sandstone building symbolises German democracy and unity like no other place.
  • Höchst Castle Square: Höchst Castle Square is a picturesque area directly adjacent to the old castle and in the centre of the old quarter of Frankfurt Höchst. From the River Main, one is entering the square through the medieval gate in the powerful Custom’s Tower. A spreading oak dominates the southern part of the square: as a “peace oak” it was planted in 1872 to commemorate the Franco-German War. From here one’s eye is attracted by the square itself and its lovingly restored buildings. To the west of the square is the Old Castle with its gatehouse dating back to Renaissance times and the Gothic tower. To the east there are half-timbered houses from the 16th and 18th centuries.
  • Old Sachsenhausen: In the narrow cobblestone lanes and small squares with half-timbered houses and fountains, visitors to Frankfurt feel like they have been transported back in time. In the large and small Rittergasse, in Paradiesgasse and Klappergasse “Eppelwoi taverns” are lined up one after another. On long benches at wooden tables, visitors drink their “Stöffche” here from “Gerippten”, which means they drink their apple wine from ribbed apple wine glasses. There are Frankfurt specialities such as beef with green sauce (Grüne Soße), hand cheese (Handkäs) or a takeaway pretzel from the pretzel man.
  • Main Tower: The Main Tower of the Hesse-Thuringia State Bank is extremely popular with the people of Frankfurt and visitors alike: it is the only one in the city where the public can visit the viewing platform and it also houses a restaurant. Europe’s highest television studio is on the 53rd and 54th floors. The Main Tower actually consists of two interconnected high-rise structures: a square one that is 170 m high and a round one that is 199.5 m high with unmirrored glass. It is open until 10.00 p.m.
  • Skyline Plaza: The Skyline Plaza shopping mall is next to the exhibition centre and its roof offers a special attraction – the Skyline Garden, which covers an area of around 7300 m². However, it is not only a green space with lawns, trees and plants. It also houses a large café, two children’s playgrounds, a boules pitch, table tennis tables, table football, a large chess board, a putting green for gold players and a stage for events. Anyone who would like to gaze over Frankfurt’s high-rise buildings, the nearby Taunus mountains and the Europaviertel that is currently being built can climb up to a viewing platform.
