As well as opening up new applications, products are being developed that will use wireless communications to enable access to stranded diagnostics generated by smart Hart devices installed on analogue loops that would be expensive to upgrade to digital. For example, intelligent digital valve controllers placed in critical applications have been able to provide diagnostic information about the health of control valves for some time, but by using the Emerson Process Management WirelessHart adapter (Thum) attached to a Hart instrument or valve controller, the operator will be able to access rich diagnostic data via a wireless gateway. Wireless delivers the previously unused predictive diagnostic information, enabling operations and maintenance improvements.
The low cost of installing wireless devices compared to their wired counterparts means that end users are now able to introduce additional measurement points throughout the process.
