Small Bavarian company grows to global player
Today, Flottweg is one of the leading manufacturers of decanter centrifuges, belt presses and disc stack centrifuges. Its long and broad experience in solid-liquid separation based on intensive research has resulted in a highly developed and customer-tailored range of products. The success of the company, which set out 75 years ago making motorcycles and aircraft engines, is not limited to German-speaking countries. Flottweg is represented by subsidiaries and branch offices in many countries all over the world.

Flottweg’s success story reflects the courage of the company’s owner, Dr. Georg Bruckmayer, who remained undeterred by the global economic crisis. It all began with an engine: In 1918, Gustav Otto, son of the inventor of the internal combustion engine, started a new company in Munich and developed a bicycle with an auxiliary motor called Flottweg. In 1932 Bruckmayer acquired the rights to the protected name “Flottweg” and founded an engine manufacturing company called Flottweg-Motoren-Werke, which in 1943 had to be relocated to Vilsbiburg, 60 miles northeast of Munich. On the lookout for a new main pillar, the management decided in the mid-1950’s to develop, manufacture and sell decanter centrifuges. Over the years, Flottweg has built up widespread technical knowledge in all areas of mechanical solid-liquid separation.

Wide product range
Flottweg’s current product range consists of decanters, belt presses and disc stack centrifuges, covering many different applications and throughputs from pilot plants to large-scale, continuously operating production facilities. The decanters are used for continuous separation of suspended solids from liquids, clarification of liquids, classification of fine pigments and so on. The company provides a broad range of decanter sizes from laboratory to big industrial machines with a product throughput of 250 m3/h. They are typically employed to dewater and thicken sludge from municipal and industrial water and waste water facilities, recover and process animal and vegetable products, manufacture bev-erages and produce renewable energy forms such as biodiesel and ethanol. The Sedicanter series, on the other hand, is ideal for separating solids from liquids whenever the solids are too fine-grained to be processed in a decanter or the sediment cannot be easily discharged from a de-canter due to its soft consistency. The Sedi-canter range includes sizes suitable for product throughputs up to 50 m3/h. These types are recommended for separating biomass from fermentation broth, recovering and processing vegetable proteins such as soy or recovering beer from surplus yeast. Flottweg Tricanters enable three-phase separation, in other words simultaneous separation of two immiscible liquids with different densities and one solid phase, providing the two liquids have different densities and the solid phase is the heaviest. Their design and operating principle are similar to those of the Decanter series. The most important difference is the separate discharge of the two liquid phases. The Tricanter is available in all sizes to industrial scale with a maximum product throughput of 80 m3/h. The Sorticanter is a special horizontal decanter centrifuge that continuously separates two solid phases with different densities from a liquid. The process is assisted by a carrier liquid with a specific gravity that lies between the densities of the two solid streams. The Sorticanter range was developed for a solids throughput of up to 1000 kg/h.
The disc stack centrifuges with a self-cleaning bowl are used for clarification and three-phase separation of liquid-solid suspensions. Flottweg recently evolved a new AC series of disc stack centrifuges. These are equipped with the SoftShot discharge system and continue accurate partial discharge and smooth operation. The disc stack centrifuge range comprises several sizes from 1 to 85 m3/h. Belt presses are used for continuous separation of liquids from different solid-liquid mixtures. They are made entirely of stainless steel. This provides a high hygienic standard and long-term durability. The belt presses are distinguished by a clear design with easy accessibility for operation and cleaning. The pneumatic belt control system ensures reliable operation with minimum manpower. Flottweg belt presses are available in sizes from 1 to 40 t/h raw material.
Clean water is a basic requirement of life and therefore our most precious resource. The C3E centrifuge is a modern, high-performance decanter for throughputs up to 20 m3/h. It is designed to meet the needs of individual applications involving thickening and dewatering municipal waste water sludge. Its excellent separation efficiency and compact design guarantee superior performance and optimum value for money in purification plants. All product-wetted parts are made of high-grade stainless steel. The C3E additionally convince with unbeatable energy efficiency. The bowl is driven by an electric motor with a frequency inverter and the scroll by the Simp-Drive.
