ESD, a member of the Ekato Group, critically assessed the mechanical seal ESD66P after it had been in operation for three years in reactors for the production of polyethylene. The triple-acting high pressure mechanical seal was permanently exposed to temperatures up to 300 °C and pressures up to 240 bar. In spite of this extreme stress, preventive maintenance revealed that the seal rings were hardly worn – and this with low leakage rates. Pictures taken of the silicon carbide and carbon rings during the assessment were virtually flawless; even the interference patterns for both seal rings could be recognised using flatness measurements with plane glass – a sign of very even seal faces. In addition, the seals guaranteed optimum sealing and highest operational safety at all times during operation.
