Sulzer has developed a mixer unit for use in PVC extrusion. The geometry of the mixer was designed with the aid of Rapid Prototyping methodology, resulting in a range of performance features such as very good residence time distribution and high mixing degree with a low pressure drop. The modular concept of this patented mixer provides the advantage that the static mixer can be suited to individual requirements regarding e.g. homogeneity, space, pressure and viscosity. Polymers with a critical residence time element can be homogenized by correct adaptation of the mixer design to the specific extrusion system. The very low shear rate within the mixer, a narrow residence time spectrum and consequently excellent flow characteristics both contribute to the gentle and careful mixing action in the Polyguard mixer. The mixer is equipped with semicircular baffle elements which serve to reduce zones of inhomogeneity by a factor of 2 to 3, depending upon the number of mixer modules employed.
