Induction technology and integrated memory chip improve pH analysis

In fluid analysis, the connection between the sensor and the cable has traditionally been the weakest point. The Memosens technology now provides a remedy based on a new principle: induction technology combines maximum fault protection with easy handling. At the same time, Memosens allows process-relevant data to be stored directly in the sensor. The integrated memory chip not only guarantees complete documentation but also allows the measuring point to be directly connected to the Internet.

Measurement variables with very low currents makes great demands on the connection between the sensor and the transmitter. Leaks and corrosion impair the transmission of measured values. In particular, high-impedance measurements in a dirty or damp environment quickly become a problem. In the past, it has always been necessary to use expensive MIL connectors with gold contacts, complicated special cables and complex measuring amplifiers in order to minimise the voltage drop. The systems nevertheless remained prone to failure.

The Memosens technology eliminates these disadvantages. An inductive connection between the cable and the electrode permits a hermitic seal between the plug-in head and the coupling, facilitates bidirectional data transmission and supplies the plug-in head with power. The mechanical and electrical benefits are evident: there are no longer any contacts that are liable to corrode and moisture is no longer able to distort the voltage signal. The length and quality of the cable are almost irrelevant to the quality of signal transmission.
The principle of galvanic separation from the measuring transmitter simplifies the wiring and improves electromagnetic compatibility. The plug-in connection between the cable and the sensor, which is designed with a bayonet connector, is not only easy to handle but also very safe. It is no longer possible to accidentally unscrew the sensors from process connections when disconnecting the cable, for instance.
With the help of its built-in intelligence, Memosens stores process and sensor-relevant information. This information can be traced back to calibration in the factory and is useful in a number of ways. Records of sensor loading, for example, can be used for look-ahead maintenance, thus significantly extending the service life of the measuring point. The electronic signature required in the pharmaceutical sector points the way for the future. Compliance with GMP guidelines is ensured by the complete process documentation and by the password protection for the measuring transmitter in accordance with 21 CFR 11. In addition, sensitive production processes can be retraced – an increasingly common requirement.
One crucial advantage of the Memosens technology is that it stores calibration data. This means that the sensors can be pre-calibrated under optimum conditions in the measuring laboratory and then replaced in the system in a few simple steps. This avoids lengthy measurement interruptions in sensitive processes, facilitates work on relatively inaccessible measuring points and increases safety in hazardous areas.
