Intelligent detection system added to portfolio

Priority for explosion protection
It has been a good six months since IEP Technologies GmbH became part of Hoerbiger as a Hoerbiger Safety Solution Company. The experts for industrial explosion protection will exhibit at this year’s Powtech under the umbrella brand Hoerbiger with a new, intelligent detection system in their product range. Rudi Post, General Manager of IEP Technologies GmbH, provided information and answers to the editor’s questions.
Mr. Post, the takeover by Hoerbiger took place several months ago. What advantages were obtained by that?
Post: With its high expertise in the field of industrial explosion protection, IEP Technologies is optimally suited to the Hoerbiger strategy, in which the topic of safety is increasingly gaining importance. IEP offers explosion protection and non-return valves for oil, gas, soot and dust applications in machinery and plant engineering. With this combination and our wide range of explosion suppression, isolation and pressure relief technologies, we can score in the market and stay one step ahead of our competitors. Our customers especially benefit from our longstanding experience and the newly acquired insights due to the takeover. Furthermore, we have the chance to accelerate our successful growth strategy.
What can we expect your booth at this year’s Powtech to look like?
Post: Following our trade fair premiere at the Schüttgut/Solids in Dortmund, we are also planning to present our portfolio jointly at Powtech under the umbrella brand Hoerbiger. Visitors will be able to gain a broad overview of the many different possibilities in the field of industrial explosion protection solutions and safety relevant components at our Booth 319 in Hall 1. Our experienced sales team will be available to discuss the technical aspects and provide consulting. We’re thus in a position to offer a suitable solution for virtually all production requirements.
Will there be any new innovations on show alongside your proven products and systems?
Post: Yes, there definitely will. One highlight at the trade fair will be SmartDS, our intelligent detection system, which detects explosions and minimises the risk of false alarms at the same time. The system consists of either one or two dynamic pressure sensors and a smart calculation system, which calculates the expected rate of pressure rise based on experimental data and 25 years’ experience. In the event of an explosion, SmartDS rapidly analyses the pressure and initiates safety measures. The system is characterised by its fast and safe reactions and precise measurements. SmartDS is used in dedusting plants, for example, where it can be mounted in either the dirty or the clean gas side of the housing. The two dynamic pressure sensors compare the different measurements continuously. In this way, a distinction can be made between the dynamic pressure rise of an explosion and process-related pressure fluctuations. As a result, the risk of false alarms is reduced to a minimum. The system allows post-event forensics – storing the temporal pressure profiles of each detector with an accurate time stamp, which makes it easier to understand process conditions and explosion event characteristics. Potential process disturbances can be effectively prevented in future.
Are there any other new products apart from SmartDS as a result of the takeover? Which services will you provide in future?
Post: In particular, we added Hoerbiger’s EVN 2.0 flameless pressure relief valve to our portfolio. This valve combines numerous technical innovations. It closes automatically immediately after relieving the pressure successfully, so that normal operation can continue. This flameless pressure relief valve complies with the latest version of EN 16009 and impresses with its easy maintenance and airtight construction. Even inside buildings, flexible plant design is possible because it is so compact. Plant and tank protection in relation to dust explosions remains the mainstay of our business. Our customers can count on our diverse engineering services in addition to our proven explosion protection systems. Our dedicated team of application engineers, sales managers and service technicians come up with highly advanced safety systems to meet specific requirements, so that people, plants and the environment are reliably and efficiently protected from the devastating effects of industrial explosions.
If you take a look into the future, where will IEP Technologies be a few years from now?
Post: The aim is to significantly expand our sales network under the Hoerbiger umbrella brand. Hoerbiger gives IEP Technologies customers access to a global network of service subsidiaries. This means the greatest possible proximity to our users, especially in the oil, gas and process industries with sites worldwide. We have also started to develop a new, innovative explosion protection solution. This systematic approach guarantees sustainable protection for people, equipment and the environment from the catastrophic consequences of explosions in industrial applications.

Newson Gale strengthens the Hoerbiger group
Following the takeover of IEP Technologies last year, Hoerbiger has now struck again to expand its portfolio of plant safety components. The Hoerbiger Group acquired Newson Gale of Nottingham (UK) with effect from January 4, 2016. Newson Gale provides an extensive range of solutions for suppressing static electricity and hence avoiding ignition sources in flammable and potentially explosive atmosphere. “Safety and explosion protection are attractive growth markets which are perfectly suited to Hoerbiger’s core business. That’s why they offer us outstanding development potential”, explained Martin Komischke, CEO of Hoerbiger Holding AG after the takeover. “Newson Gale’s reputation and know-how will strengthen our role as a developer and global supplier of service and safety related components.” Newson Gale products will also be on show at the upcoming Nuremberg Powtech fair (Booth 319, Hall 1).
