The Achema 2003 – the leading international event for suppliers to the chemical industry and all branches in the process industry held in Frankfurt am Main from 19 to 24 May 2003 was a complete success for exhibitors and visitors. 3819 exhibitors from 48 countries presented equipment, technological competence, new developments and services for the process industries at the Frankfurt fairground in 12 exhibition groups on a net area of 138,345 m². A total of 192,161 participants from over 100 countries used the Achema to exchange experience. At 41%, the proportion of foreign exhibitors was well above that of the preceding events (2000: 37.7%; 1997: 34.2%). The top five exhibiting countries, apart from Germany (2269) were Italy (245), Great Britain (205), Switzerland (174), the USA (150) and France (129). The percentage decline in exhibitor numbers of 7.9% compared with 2000 is mainly attributable to the decrease of 316 German exhibitors; their branch was overshadowed by difficult economic environment, numerous mergers and company acquisitions. At -0.8% the number of foreign exhibitors was more or less stable compared with 2000. With an exhibition area of 138,345 m2, corresponding to a fall of only 5% over 2000, the trend towards a steady reduction in the average stand area was reversed for the first time for many Achemas.
