The wayRTS software enables Altana Pharma to optimise its cross-plant pharmaceutical production processes in real time. At Altana, two production sites and eight distribution centres have so far been integrated in the planning and control of supply chain operations with wayRTS. The pharmaceutical company expects to achieve greater flexibility in its delivery processes.
It has taken supply chain specialists at Wassermann just eight months to implement the wayRTS (Real Time Simulation) software at Altana Pharma. With the successful deployment of wayRTS, Wassermann is smoothing Altana’s access to real-time planning and control of its production processes. The real-time software has been implemented as an add-on to the existing SAP system and offers planners much more powerful functionalities for operational planning and control of their value-added processes compared to the ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) standard.

New and modified planning information is received from the SAP R/3 system by wayRTS every hour and processed in real time. Managers in charge of planning can then control and optimise production at Altana’s Singen and Oranienburg plants on the basis of data that is continuously updated from eight distribution sites throughout Altana’s European logistics network. Visualisation techniques help Altana planners obtain a transparent view of their supply chain across all plants and with all dependencies. This enables them to identify bottlenecks and backlogs reliably and resolve them quickly through appropriate operational measures. In order to determine the best action to take, the operator can instruct wayRTS to simulate alternative scenarios along with their consequences for all process steps, deadlines and capacities in the supply chain. Being able to process all the information in real time provides the pharmaceutical company with a valid basis for decisions on how to plan its operations. As soon as the planning scenarios have been optimised, the data is fed via an interface into the SAP system, where it triggers defined activities such as production orders and purchase requisitions.
The optimised storage concept provided by wayRTS enables Altana to maintain the complete planning model of its supply chain permanently in the system’s live cache. The complex logistical and production chains across all Altana Pharma plants are mapped and updated here in a split second. Time-consuming simulation runs and interruptions to planning activities are no longer required. WayRTS was developed according to the GAMP4 standard and meets the high validation requirements of the pharmaceutical industry for computer systems.
