On the route of growth and innovation

Aerzener Maschinenfabrik opens new production centre presenting extensive product developments
On the route of growth and innovation

Within 140 years of company history, this year on 3rd April a new age has started for Aerzener Maschinenfabrik GmbH – one of the worldwide leading manufacturers of blowers and compressors. The official opening ceremony of the new production centre had been presented under the motto “The future has begun”. Klaus-Hasso Heller, CEO, and Christian Wulff, Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, were responsible for the ceremony speeches. Apropos of nothing, Aerzener Maschinenfabrik has presented considerable progresses of its machinery.

Early 2006 it had already been decided to extend the production located in Aerzen, investing a total sum of 65 million Euro. The first steps hereto had been a detailed planning project in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for translation of a new production centre, in order to obtain the announced quantity increase from 15,000 units in 2005 to more than 30,000 machines in 2009. The new area measures a total size of 110,000 m², the production centre has, therefore, a surface of 11,000 m². During summer 2006 the excavation work had started, followed by the laying of the foundation stone in November 2006. After a building phase of 13 months and an investment sum of 12 million Euro only for the new building, it could be moved into the production. One by one the new processing centres were installed and started with their operation. In future, the new standard machines will be completely manufactured here in increased quantities, starting from the delivery of the raw material up to the final assembly of the blowers and compressors, incl. packing. The appeal of the new production centre lies in its innovative production concepts, the manufacture as per highest quality measures as well as an energy-efficient construction. For Klaus-Hasso Heller, CEO of Aerzener Maschinenfabrik, the orientation of the company is clear for the following years: “We count on the continuation of the very dynamic growth, the further extension of Aerzen sales and service organi-sation as well as the establishment of further assembly locations. In addition, we intend to remain a stable, independent family-owned company. An important success guarantor are the consequent innovations originating from Aerzen.” Best proof for this are the new sizes of blower units Delta Blower Generation 5 and the oil-free compressor units Delta Screw Generation 5 presented at the opening ceremony for the first time.

Oil-free compressor units
The screw compressors Delta Screw Generation 5 distinguish themselves by two different rotor profiles: For low-pressure applications up to 2 bar a specially designed 3 + 4-profile (VML-compressors), for high-er pressures up to 3.5 bar a 4 + 6-profile is available (VM-compressors). The energy efficiency increases furthermore by two different pressure outlets per rotor profile, arranging depending on pressure and volume flow for an optimum of internal compression. The different internal pressure ratios avoid possible overpressure, the efficiency of the machines increases. Therefore, e.g. in the low pressure range up to 2 bar an energetic advantage of more than 20 % may result. Furthermore, the accessory components of the compressor units were revised technically. Due to innovations in the discharge pressure silencing, pressure losses have been reduced by up to 20 %.
In addition, as standard only motors of the energy efficient class EFF1 are used. From this result further saving potentials depending on size of up to 3 %. Moreover, compared to the previous generation the sound level of the new series Delta Screw Generation 5 could be reduced considerably, on the average by about 6 dB(A), in the individual case even more. Beyond that special attention was given to the fact that absorption material within the silencer elements is no longer necessary and therefore not used anymore. Thanks to the considerable sound reductions, costly special measures (such as e.g. special acoustic hoods) are in most cases no longer needed. A further distinct advantage for the end user is the Atex certification as spark arrester. The translation of the European machine directive 94/9/EG for explosion-hazardous areas is becoming more and more important in all branches and ranges of application. The compressor units made by Aerzener are especially designed for the requirements in categories 2 and 3 for dust as well as gas zones and certified accordingly. In addition, the new units Delta Screw Generation 5 distinguish themselves by a special solution for explosion protection in pneumatic conveying of bulk material. If combustible bulk material is conveyed pneumatically, in the unit in case of certain dust-air concentrations inflammable mixtures may develop. On the basis of the EU-directive 1999/92/EG (Atex 137) therefore an additional protection e.g. by means of an external spark arrester in connection with compressors is to be provided. At this point starts the innovative solution of Aerzener Maschinenfabrik: The newly designed discharge silencer of Aerzen compressor units is free from absorption material, the sound is dampened only by means of air-redirections. In expensive and practical tests this silencer could now be certified in addition as spark arrester. External spark arresters are no longer necessary. Besides utmost safety, consequently costs are saved and pressure and energy losses are reduced considerably. Furthermore, the new compressor units Delta Screw Generation 5 distinguish themselves by their very compact construction. Additionally the installation option “Side-by-Side” is available. The units are being operated from the front. All components requiring maintenance are easily accessible. One of the most important advantages is the new oil system. The oil level can be viewed and checked from the outside of the unit while it is still in operation. The patented drive concept with belt drive also leads to a reduction of the maintenance expenditure and thus reduction of the Life-Cycle-Costs. Further advantages of the new series Delta Screw Generation 5 are, that absorption material has not been used for sound dampening (foodstuff purity), the use of a mechanical fan as well as class 0-certification for the oil-free unit. The Delta Screw Generation 5 is currently available as belt-driven design for overpressure, negative pressure and nitrogen applications in nominal widths DN 125 up to DN 200. A flexible modular construction makes it possible, that within a range of nominal widths all compressor and motor sizes in question for belt drive can be installed. Consequently an optimal adjustment to the corresponding performance requirement or later modifications becoming necessary are possible without problems. For the new series Generation 5 seven sizes are available for intake volume flows from about 270 m³/h up to 2,600 m³/h and overpressures up to 3.5 bar. In vacuum operation VML compressors can be used up to 70 % vacuum (0.3 bar abs.), as special design up to 85 % vacuum (0.15 bar abs.).
Sizes extended
The blower units Delta Blower Generation 5 have been available in 10 machine sizes for overpressure applications up to 1,000 mbar in nominal widths from DN 50 to DN 200 and intake volume flows of approx. 30 m³/h up to 3,600 m³/h. The range of blower units for upper volume flow is expanded by the new machine types GM 80L-G5 and GM 90S-G5 in nominal width of DN 250. Motor ratings of 18.5 kW up to max. 200 kW can be installed. In addition to this, series start-up of machine sizes GM 130L-G5 and GM 150S-G5 in nominal width DN 300 will take place soonest. Volume flows of these machines will cover the range up to 9,100 m³/h, overpressures up to 1,000 mbar and motor rating up to 355 kW.

Bright times
In year 2007 the order entry of Aerzener Maschinenfabrik GmbH reached its record value of 235.8 million Euro representing an increase of 25 % compared with 2006. Also the turnover could be completed with 190 million Euro showing a plus of 18 % which has record level. The turnover of Aerzen group, counting 26 subsidiary companies worldwide besides the parent company, has reached a consolidated value of 260 million Euro, in the field of order entry even 300 million Euro. All in all Aerzener Maschinenfabrik has more than doubled its order entry and turnover within the last five years. The current business year 2008 develops positively as well, as in April the current orders in hand already reached the record value of 155 million Euro. The good economic situation worldwide is not the only reason for the rapid growth of Aerzener Maschinenfabrik, rather the positive state of business at present is the consequence of a stronger internationalisation providing a continuous innovative strength. In 2007 the new subsidiaries Aerzen Italia and Aerzen Andina in Colombia had been founded. For 2008 the foundation of Aerzen Russia and Aerzen Gulf in the U.A.E. is planned.
