New from old

Added benefit from replacing existing mixing machines

Vertical mixer for the pharmaceutical industry
Machines for preparing and processing material are still undergoing further development. In the first instance, such developments are concerned with sim- plified and more economical production of the units. At the same time, they are aimed at increasing the benefits to the operator and speeding up production processes. One type of mixer which conforms to both criteria is the vertical mixer from amixon.

Stefan Ruberg

This patented precision mixer brings together a wide range of features. Its operating principle is based on that of the vertical mixer with a flat bottom. A helical mixing device screws the mixing materials upwards and allows them to slide downwards along the shaft of the mixing device in the centre of the mixing chamber. The helix of the mixing device has a special configuration. This guarantees reliable mixing of the materials throughout the whole of the mixing container. This type of flow pattern always occurs independently of the following parameters:
  • Size of the mixer
  • Filling level (from 5 % upwards)
  • Rotational speed of the mixing device
  • Consistency of the materials, which can be present as powders, moist materials, suspensions or pastes
  • Flow characteristics of the materials
  • To a large extent it is also independent of material particle size distributions.
If the mixing process needs to be intensified, it is possible to fit cutting rotor units, the fast-revolving blades of which can disagglomerate any clumps of material that are present or produce a micro-fine dispersion of fluids. These units protrude from the side into the mixing chamber, so that the material flowing past them is efficiently disagglomerated.
High-viscosity substances are effectively and rapidly mixed if they are sprayed from a lance directly into the turbulent working region of the cutting rotor. In addition to its ideal mixing and flow properties, the helical mixing device guarantees complete evacuation of the mixed product. The residue of a 4 t mixing batch, for example, has been measured as reduced to less than 100 g within one minute.
Simultaneously demonstration in the laboratory
The majority of globally operating pharmaceutical producers would like to establish a single technical standard, in order to achieve consistent validation of the manufacturing prescriptions used by their many product groups. Uncertainties arise whenever new or replacement equipment has to be procured. amixon, the mixer manufacturer, can provide a special service here. The preparation characteristics of older, existing mixing systems can be demonstrated simultaneously with those of newly developed systems in the Paderborn laboratory. The specified mixing and preparation results obtained with the old mixers can be transferred to the new generation of mixers using scale-up parameters. The results are almost always identical. Users no longer need have any qualms about ordering a modern mixer that can be swiftly put into operation in an existing facility. Existing recipes are produced to specification faster, using fewer human resources and with shorter set-up times and reduced hygiene risks. Moreover, the new mixer can also handle other, more complex material preparation tasks. The customer thus benefits from valuable scope for expanding product and process development activities.

cpp: In the year 2003 you introduced amixon to the market as a new name. What lies behind this?
Ruberg: The firm of Ruberg-Mischtechnik KG, which has been in existence for 20 years, will remain in our sole possession and so will the rights to use the name. Ruberg-Mischtechnik will continue unchanged as the manufacturing company for mixers and processing equipment. Similarly, nothing will alter as far as our customers are concerned. Our sales partners, prices, quality and other terms and conditions will remain precisely as before. In future, customers will benefit from access to our extensive consulting services as well as to far-reaching support with solving their technical processing tasks.
cpp: What is amixon’s goal?
Ruberg: amixon GmbH will continue along the development path taken by Ruberg-Mischtechnik GmbH. The most important goal of amixon GmbH is to inform customers and all interested parties comprehensively about all aspects of industrial mixing technology, enabling them to profit from premium service and individually formulated advice. This includes the extension of our laboratories in Paderborn and in Memphis, Tennessee as well as the current enlargement of our equipment construction and manufacturing areas by approximately 40 %.
amixon GmbH will in future combine the activities of our own companies Ruberg-Mischtechnik KG and Clever-Cut GmbH, a service enterprise for three-dimensional water-torch cutters, and our partner company Promoter Engineering, a manufacturer of electrical controls, process visualisation equipment and handling controls.
