Modular metering station with batch tank

The heart of the system is an intelligent metering pump of the Elados series
Modular metering station with batch tank

Safe metering of liquid chemicals is a vital process throughout all areas of industry. The quality of the metering station – and thus the entire process – is directly dependent on the quality of the components fitted. There must be a choice between simple and increasingly complex systems. In the case of Ecolab metering systems, the required components can be combined as necessary according to a modular principle.

Process safety is just one of the requirements common to all industry applications. Fulfilment of and adherence to legal requirements (e.g. WHG in Germany) are top priorities along with a cost-effective and variable design and easy project planning, commissioning and servicing. When it comes to metering containers up to a capacity of 200 l, achieving a compact design and easy installation without loss of quality or safety represent a considerable challenge.
If liquids with a tendency to form sediments are stored in batch tanks, using an agitator can provide a homogeneous mix. Slightly inclining the seat of the agitator increases its efficiency. In this way, the slowly turning agitator offers optimum performance up to 700 rpm and assures the ecological homogeneity of the liquids. Moreover, the agitator shaft length is exactly adjusted to the relevant container size. Ecolab metering containers are manufactured from polyethylene in a rotation process. The container design integrates numerous details to facilitate convenient and efficient functioning. The inserts fitted on the container ceiling for direct mounting of Elados metering pumps permit capacities of up to 120 l/h, depending on requirements. The simple arrangement on the ceiling allows fast installation of a suction pipe and agitator as well as other accessories.
Elados metering pump series
The metering pump forms the heart of the metering station; the choice of metering pump determines the direction of the downstream process. Membrane metering pumps are ideal whenever highly effective, aggressive liquid chemicals need to be metered precisely and safely. The specially optimised solutions offered by the Elados EMP metering pump series are suitable for both simple metering tasks and more complex processes. The electronic version E00 meets the complete requirement profile for the former, whilst the E60 version masters more complicated processes and can be individually adapted.
The Elados EMP E60 plus membrane metering pump, including the OGM plus (oval gear meter) flow rate meter satisfies all the requirements specified for modern metering concepts for liquid media. All common industrial metering functions are integrated in the pump control. Both external control options in the form of mA signals or impulses and internal operating modes are available.
An intuitive menu system with a short learning curve guides the user through the pump functions in self-explanatory steps. All pumps share the same logical operating structure. Operation is also easy in poor lighting conditions thanks to the large backlit graphics display.
All available adjustment options are displayed to the user in plain text menus: Operating Mode Selection, Configuration and Calibration. Operational data is logged.
Automatic flow rate monitoring
Automatic flow rate monitoring is often essential in critical processes to ensure the safety of and adherence to the whole of the process sequence. Thanks to the OGM plus flow meter, which is simply plugged into the Elados EMP E60 plus, a preset flow rate can be compared to the actual flow.
If the preset limiting values are exceeded or fallen short of, an alarm appears on the display and a signal is output for external evaluation e.g. using an acoustic transmitter. Blocked or burst metering pipes can thus be detected immediately. Metering can then be either stopped or continued, depending on the setting. No elaborate, high-cost drive technology is required in the pump for this purpose.
If the ambient conditions change, for example if the system pressure varies significantly, many metering pumps are unable to cope. Regulation tends to be either very complicated or technically infeasible. The advantages of the Elados EMP E60 plus membrane metering pump over conventional solutions are particularly evident in such situations. The pump maintains the desired, constant metering volume extremely precisely by determining the actually required quantity and the integrated control algorithm.
One important prerequisite of an efficient solution is that adequate power reserves are taken into account when selecting the pump. This ensures a consistent delivery capacity regardless of any variations in ambient conditions like back-pressure.
Multi-function valve
A wide range of accessories can be supplied to fulfil all common metering requirements and guarantee maximum performance. The multi-function valve, which combines functions like overpressure, pressure control, manual venting and degassing and drain in a single device, provides a good example.
The accessory range is rounded off by other devices such as a suction lance, a pulsation attenuator, a metering valve and installation material in different designs.
Ultimately, it is up to the user to decide whether all components should be prepared for assembly in-house or fitted and pre-installed in the factory so that they are ready to run.
Conclusion
The metering station with batch tank and its matching metering components represent a cost-effective and safe storage and retrieval system for all common metering processes. Fulfilment of and adherence to legal requirements for the storage of chemicals are simultaneously assured. Owing to the modular system, the individual components can be easily combined to meet specific requirements and if necessary pre-installed as a working unit. In addition to economic advantages, the Elados EMP offers a comprehensive series of pumps for a wide and diverse range of metering processes. The integrated functions greatly facilitate project planning as well as commissioning and servicing of the plant.
