Drawing on its many years of experience in the design and production of gas-lubricated seals and the manufacture of metal bellows seals, Burgmann offers its MFLC GS high-performance seal for pumps in extreme cryogenic applications, e.g. with liquid nitrogen. The innovative design of this seal stands for high operating safety and efficiency: The loosely inserted carbon seal face is sealed by surface contact between carbon and bellows. This obviates the need for a secondary seal – which can lead to leakage at low temperatures. A metal bellows unit made of Inconel 718 ensures axial closing pressure in unpressurized mode. Optimized aerodynamic gas grooves guarantee contact-free running, whatever the pump’s operating status. Power consumption of the sliding faces and the drop in pressure over the sealing face width result in a two-phase flow in the sealing gap; where conventional liquid-lubricated mechanical seals are concerned this in turn leads to dry running of the sliding faces on the atmosphere side. However, the gas-lubricated MFLC-GS uses this vaporizing effect in the sealing gap to separate the sliding faces, thereby ensuring friction-free operation.
