Drying without cross contamination

Isolator for vacuum drying oven with integrated slurry filter
Drying without cross contamination

In order to avoid open product handling with toxic components, an isolator is flanged onto the VSD vacuum drying oven. This isolator is equipped with a pressure relief valve for safety reasons. The complete system, consisting of the slurry filter, isolator and vacuum drying oven, can be installed in an explosion protected area (Zone 1).

Pink offers a solution consisting of a vacuum drying oven, an isolator and a slurry filter that is ideal for drying toxic products without cross contamination. The units are available in stainless steel 316L or Hastelloy C22. The surface roughness of less than 0.4 µm complies with stringent pharmaceutical standards. The complete system is designed according to GMP requirements. All product-contacting parts are rounded and visible. The system is easy to clean and prevents cross contamination.

Ingenious combination
The slurry filter is integrated into the isolator and designed for a maximum overpressure of 3 bar. The product is filled into a basket inside the slurry filter. A tube is connected between the wall of the isolator and the cover of the slurry filter for filling. The cover is opened manually with the help of two gas struts. The slurry filter is pressurised with nitrogen. Lightweight components are forced out of the cake. The condition of the filter cloth influences the filtration efficiency. After the filtration process, the cover of the slurry filter is opened and the filter cake is placed on several trays. The basket can be removed from the slurry filter in order to avoid losing product particles. In addition, the slurry filter cloth can be exchanged inside the isolator and a new basket inserted through the Boyer door. The filled trays are deposited on the shelves of the VSD vacuum drying oven.
Two-door design
The depth of the isolator has been reduced to a minimum in the vicinity of the vacuum drying oven as an ergonomic measure. A special two-door design was developed to meet this requirement. The doors open sideways and can be turned 180° about the vertical axis. This movement also allows easy cleaning. After the drying process, the trays are removed from the vacuum oven. The dried product is transferred to a container through a rapid transfer port. This container, which is hermetically sealed, can be docked onto another system equipped with the same type of port. The trays remain in the isolator after use and are placed on a special rack. Tools or the filter basket can be inserted into the system through the Boyer door. The vacuum drying oven and the isolator are equipped with pressure relief valves for safety reasons. The isolator is operated under negative pressure in the range from -100 to -150 Pa. The glove ports on the lower level are oval to improve handling and flexibility. The pressure control system of the isolator is able to compensate damage to one glove and thus prevent toxic gases or products from escaping into the atmosphere.
System cleaning
The operator can inspect all the interior surfaces of the system. Hooks are provided under the roof inside the isolator for hanging the spray guns necessary for cleaning. The operator can use these guns to clean the shelves of the vacuum drying oven as well as the inside surfaces of the isolator. The shelves slope towards the front to allow the cleaning fluid to drain more easily. Two fluid discharge flanges are located in the bottom. The basket can be removed in order to clean the slurry filter.
