Throughout the history of advanced pump technology, robust, dynamic, high-performance drives have often been a decisive factor in breakthrough developments. German pump technology leader Fristam has come to rely on Nord Gear’s range of drive units.
Fristam Pumpen F. Stamp KG GmbH & Co. is a renowned specialist for precision-forged and cast, high-grade, stainless steel pumps used for a wide range of tasks in the process industries, from the disposal of various sewages to the circulation of pure water, soluble detergents, fertilisers and other liquids. In many of these applications uncompromising hygiene, full FDA conformity, compliance with GMP provisions and the utilisation of distinctive, process-specific materials are basic requirements, observed even more strictly than in food processing plants. Multi-purpose centrifugal and positive displacement types dominate the range of Fristam’s pump models, accounting for about 95 % of the company’s annual turnover. In addition, the product portfolio includes small quantities of specialised devices. The shear pump, for example, is an in-line homogeniser: based on a standard centrifugal pump design, but equipped with a rotor/stator system in place of the impeller, it draws inhomogeneous media through shearing clearances of just 0.3 mm. The nutating disc pump Genta, another special-purpose model, is designed to achieve peristaltic displacement of the medium, allowing even live cells in biopharma plants to pass through undamaged, yet in a constant flow.
Pump propulsion
Fristam delivers customised pumps with any peripheral parts desired – usually, however, the drive unit will be included. Depending on their build and type as well as the speed torque needed in an application the pumps may be driven directly by a motor or fitted with a suitable geared motor. For Fristam’s positive displacement models, Nord drives have proved to be a particularly reliable choice. Hence, high-efficiency circumferential piston and rotary lobe pumps are predominantly equipped with Nord foot-design, helical geared motors.
According to Fristam’s specifications, Nord supplies geared motors with special shafts, usually with fixed or variable maximum torques of 300 or 700 Nm. Moreover, the pumps from the British plant, for example, are furnished with standard gears, which are, however, installed in heavy-duty, single-piece cases. All bearings and seal seats are contained within the casting. This design eliminates leakages and gearset misalignment problems common to drives with bolt-on output covers, and also achieves smoother running characteristics, lower maintenance requirements and better durability. Fristam installs such single-piece gears largely with torques from 200 to 2500 Nm.
Geared motors with fixed speeds are suited to many applications, yet whenever frequent changes to the capacity or speed of flow of a medium are required in a particular process, adjustable speed drives are the appropriate solution. Fristam pumps use fixed-speed drives from about 100 to 160 min-1 and adjustable models for speeds from around 65 to 350 min-1. For ultimate user comfort, Nord also provides a fully integrated solution: the Trio, a compact drive unit incorporating a geared motor and matching frequency inverter, mounted on top and connected to the modified motor terminal box.
