The Schubert & Salzer 8049 digital positioner can be used universally since it is simple to configure it via a PC interface and a user-friendly GUI to adapt it to the particular application in question. For reasons of operating reliability, on-site operation of the positioner is limited to self-balancing, in which the positioner adapts to the valve actuator, and to adjusting the positioner setting locally. This means that the valve can be positioned on site without the need for an actuating signal from the plant’s control centre. Depending on the choice of internal actuation technology which supplies air to the valve actuator, three designs were developed – conventional valves using 4-conductor technology, others using AS-i technology and a third type with low power piezoelectric valves using twin-conductor technology. In view of their very low power consumption, the digital positioners in the 8049 range using twin-conductor technology can also be used, of course, in potentially explosive operating facilities where an intrinsically safe protection design is required (II 2 G EEx ia IIC T6). The protection class is normally IP 65.
