Canadian lubricant specialist expands into Germany
As clear as water and highly efficient

Petro-Canada Lubricants is distinctly building up its presence in the German market. The goal is that German customers, for example in the food, chemical or pharmaceutical industries, can also profit from the high-performance products of the Canadian lubricant specialist. cpp spoke to Colleen Flanagan, Category Manager, Specialty Fluids & Food Grade Lubricants at Petro-Canada.

cpp: Please describe Petro-Canada’s product range.

Flanagan: Petro-Canada manufactures over 350 different lubricants, specialty fluids and greases, which we export to more than 60 countries in six continents. Petro-Canada is one of the largest manufacturers of white oils in the world, and a leading supplier of automatic transmission oils, in what is known as the First Fill business. With more than 30 years of experience in the blending of Group II and III base oils, we offer a wide range of innovative lubricant products, which fulfill the different international standards.
cpp: What are the reasons for your increased presence in Germany?
Flanagan: Petro-Canada decided on the German market because it is viewed worldwide as demanding high quality products, and we hope for major growth levels here. While other companies are consolidating their activities in the German market, or even discontinuing them, Petro-Canada will be investing in the expansion of the sales network. The level of investment will be geared toward the increase in market share and the turnover levels of our sales partners.
cpp: Which products do you want to market in Germany?
Flanagan: Basically, there are six product ranges that we want to market in Germany. Let’s start with the Hydrex hydraulic oils. These can reduce operating costs as a result of their high level of resistance to oxidation, and can help to extend the life of the equipment as a result of outstanding wear protection. The life of equipment can also be extended by the Precision grease line, with its special 3-in-1 protection. In addition, this grease offers the user a very good level of resistance to washing and high pressure. Then there are the Compro compressor oils, the Reflo Ammonia refrigerating machine oils, which are extremely well suited to industrial cooling systems, and the Calflo heat transfer fluids. The latter have a very high level of resistance to oxidation and thermal loads. Of particular interest to customers in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries are the Purity FG products. These are H1 specialty lubricants and greases, which are cleared by the NSF for any occasional contact with food that is technically unavoidable.
cpp: What special features do the Petro-Canada products have?
Flanagan: In general, the performance of a lubricant increases with the purity of the base oils used. This is where the strength of Petro-Canada lies. Our lubricants, greases, and specialty fluids are manufactured from 99.9 % pure base oils – among the purest in the world. In addition, Petro-Canada has a constantly growing network of sales partners. We pride ourselves on providing tangible savings solutions to our customers. We help to determine the optimal lubricant and the amount expected to be needed for each customer and for each application. This means that our customers profit, on the one hand, from the transparency of expected cost levels, and on the other hand, from much greater intervals between oil changes and services.
cpp: You have already mentioned the Purity FG product range. What individual products does this range contain?
Flanagan: Purity FG includes lubricants for compressors and vacuum pumps, hydraulic fluids and light transmission lubricants, high-performance transmission lubricants, white oils, trolley fluid, multi-function aerosols, greases, light and heavy chain lubricants as well as heat carrier oils. These products harmonise perfectly with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) plans, as all the lubricants conform to the requirements of the NSF H-1, and are certified as kosher. In addition, the lubricants have a long-lasting rust protection, and high levels of resistance to air, water and the auxiliary products.
cpp: Recently you have expanded the Purity FG range to include products with antimicrobial effects.
Flanagan: Yes, that is correct. Lubricants, hydraulic oil and transmission oil in the Purity FG range are now available with Microl. This antimicrobial protective agent is cleared by the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in food lubricants. I believe that the combination of antimicrobial protection and conformity with the requirements of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and NSF International will be particularly attractive to users in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
cpp: Why is the addition of Microl necessary?
Flanagan: Food and pharmaceutical lubricants are subject to fluctuations in temperature and can come into contact with water and product residues. This means that there is a risk of microbial decomposition or decaying of the lubricants. These processes, which are often combined with an unpleasant smell, are clearly a major concern for today’s manufacturers. We achieve the goal of preventing lubricant degradation by adding Microl, the effectiveness of which has already been proven in extensive laboratory trials.
