A simple system with one thermal mass flow controller per gas can be used to create gas mixtures
Gas mixtures are very often needed in process technology and chemical engineering. By using thermal mass flow controllers, the application gains stability and accuracy as well as flexibility.

A mass flow controller (MFC) is a closed-loop control circuit, consisting of a sensor, electronics and an automatic, integrated control valve whose functions are signal processing as well as measurement and control of the mass flow rate of gases. The thermal measuring principle of the sensor ensures that the MFC operates largely independently of pressure and temperature variations. Measuring accuracy is very high due to the flow conditioning in the MFC upstream of the sensor and the automated real gas calibration.

Fast, stable and accurate
Premixed process gas is very much more expensive than its component gases, and if large quantities are needed can generate significant extra costs. The red-y smart series of thermal mass flow controllers (MFC) from Vögtlin offers an alternative here. The gases are mixed by means of a simple system using one MFC per gas. The mass flow controllers can be controlled via an analogue or digital interface. The devices are provided as standard with 4…20 mA signals for measured and set values as well as a digital RS485 interface with the Modbus protocol for control, evaluation and configuration. Temperature, totaliser and other values can be read out digitally in addition to the flow rate. Control speeds of less than 200 ms when the set/actual values are changed permit exceptionally stable regulation of the individual gases and hence absolute consistency of the gas mixture. The PC software supplied with the device permits the mass flow controllers to be connected easily to a PC or laptop. Using this software, called get red-y, the operator can enter and check the mixing ratio, for instance. The values can be read out graphically and recorded on a data logger. As an option, it is possible to save complete mixing recipes and retrieve them again later. Similarly, master-slave controls can be activated with variable mixing ratios. Several gas curves can be saved and modified on one device.
Red-y compact devices are specially designed for simple gas mixtures in which accuracy and fingertip control are required. Gas mixtures can be created manually with the help of the local display and the integrated needle valve. These devices are ideal for locations where there is no 24 V(DC) supply. Thanks to its low power consumption, the red-y compact can be operated on batteries.
